Empowering Future Leaders & Entrepreneurs for a Better World

As a long-standing academic institution rooted in Catholic principles, one of our primary focuses is to nurture compassionate individuals who are mindful of others and uphold strong core values throughout their lives. At St. Matthew School, our teaching and pastoral staff are fully dedicated to supporting each child in fulfilling their unique potential—academically and personally—so they can positively impact their communities and the world.

Students across all year groups are encouraged to take an active role within the school and the broader community, cultivating essential skills and values such as proactivity, service, empathy, leadership, and respect. To this end, the school has established several leadership groups that foster social and emotional literacy. One such group is Pastoral Jonás, an organisation that unites and empowers social initiatives, enabling members to collaborate towards meaningful goals for social change.

Community service is a high-priority goal within the school’s life-skills programmes. The Jonas Youth Team focuses on serving those in greatest need through school-organised activities, supporting foundations for children with cancer, the elderly in need, and vulnerable communities. Their mission extends beyond financial aid, emphasising emotional support and personal presence.

Members step out of their comfort zones to accompany and assist those who need it most, developing essential human values.

Shared Christmas

As part of their social and human development, our students are guided to become socially responsible individuals who consistently exemplify Catholic values in their daily lives. This commitment is exemplified in the “Navidad Compartida” (Shared Christmas) project, where students contribute programmed savings to benefit low-income families and children. This Christian charity initiative strives to provide these families with a brighter future and better opportunities in life.

Other Social Responsibility Initiatives

  • For over a decade, the school has collaborated with the Catalina Muñoz Foundation, established by two alumni and their families, to build 6 to 8 homes each year for underprivileged families living on the outskirts of the city.
  • Through the Vive por Mí Foundation, founded in memory of a beloved former student, more than 30 children receive financial aid for their schooling and meals throughout the year.
  • The school also contributes to the Egipto con Futuro Foundation, supporting vital food and education programmes.
  • Additionally, the Sol de los Andes Foundation receives assistance to provide care and support for children diagnosed with cancer.

Promoting Conflict-Resolution with Our Student Peacemakers

Conflicts and challenges are a natural part of life and essential to personal and social growth. However, finding constructive solutions is not always easy. At St. Matthew School, a dedicated team of 11th and 12th-grade students serve as Peacemakers. These student leaders act as impartial mediators, facilitating dialogue among their peers to help resolve conflicts and foster a culture of understanding and cooperation. The skills developed in this role—including effective communication, active listening, problem-solving, creativity, persuasion, leadership, and a solutions-oriented mindset—are essential for success in the workplace of the future.

Beyond their role as mediators, Peacemakers also organise community activities that encourage coexistence and reinforce the school’s Good Treatment Pact.

Student Council

The Student Council ensures and fosters active student participation in school life, cultivating leadership, collaboration, initiative, and active listening—key skills for success at university and in future careers. The council listens to and evaluates proposals from students, working to enhance coexistence and community spirit through cultural, sports, and artistic initiatives.

The council includes representatives from 4th to 12th Grade and is led by a president and vice-president from 12th Grade.

School Houses

At St. Matthew School, students are assigned to one of four Houses: Jischana, Nemgata, Sie, or Fijisca. This system helps foster a sense of identity and belonging and encourages friendly competition across all year groups.

Throughout the school year, we host various sports, artistic, academic, and cultural House competitions. Through House activities, students develop essential values and skills, including teamwork, leadership, responsibility, fair play, and perseverance. These activities not only enhance personal growth but also promote academic, social, and extracurricular excellence, while strengthening bonds among students and fostering school spirit.

The Houses

Our four houses are named after Chibcha words, paying tribute to one of the indigenous groups that formed the foundation of Colombian civilization. Each house is represented by a unique symbol, a natural element, and a colour, which are featured in the students' sports uniforms and are prominently displayed throughout the school.
